YEAR 10: SUBVERTING GENRE AND CONVENTIONS

Task: compare one scene from "The Good Bad and The Ugly" with one scene from "Unforgiven." Both scenes must contain the character played by Clint Eastwood. Be prepared to discuss the similarities and differences between these two characters.

How is the West represented in each film?

How does "Unforgiven" subvert the typical conventions of a western particularly in respect of how the protagonist William Munny is represented?

Is it significant that in "Unforgiven" one of the characters' W.W. Beauchamp is a journalist/biographer? What theme is this developing, particularly if compared to "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (Ford) 1962?
