AS AND GCSE MEDIA STUDIES: REPRESENTATION

Creating the "perfect" you. Our image is one way we represent ourselves to people. Our perceptions of self may differ from the perceptions others have of us. Creating an image of ourselves is all part of representation. Think about your image as a college student. Does it conform to established ideals and ideas of how a college student should look and even behave?

Think about pre-conceptions of the archetypal media studies teacher or perhaps even a stereotypical media studies teacher! Cords? Beard? Black polo neck jumper!

You can represent yourself as a cartoon using free software.

Here's a representation of a certain tutor created using a neat piece of software at myWebFace at

http://home.mywebface.com/faceApp/

It's free to download, safe and fun. I know some of you may even use this or similar software to create avatars from Facebook etc.

Why not cartoon yourself in a way that you would like to represent to others? Is this the perfect you? Would you feel more comfortable if this was your image?

By now you should have realised that the reality usually falls sadly short of the ideal or at least this is certainly true of this teacher - sigh...
